Ajowan

July 26, 2022

Ajowan

Ajowan is a popular spice in India prized for its power to cure everyday ailments. The seeds can be steeped in warm distilled water this is called omam water which is a folk remedy in India used for headache relief, cough medicine for a cold, an antacid for heartburn, or an antihistamine for allergies. Also used as a folk remedy in Iran for headaches and arthritis. Omam water is used for a variety of gastrointestinal ailments such as relieving belching and bloating, reducing flatulence and stopping diarrhea. Various omam waters using four different preparations help heal the digestive tract due to the presence of choline. Choline is a nutrient that aids the brain in sending healing messages to the body. Here are the following preparations:

  • whole seeds soaked in cold water
  • a warm infusion made with whole seeds
  • an extract of the powdered seeds soaked in cold water
  • roasted seeds steeped in hot water (greatest effect on GI health)

Researchers have identified medicinal active compounds in these tiny seeds one being as strong as morphine. In fact, chewing on the seeds causes the mouth to fill with a hot, bitter flavor intense enough to numb the tongue a bit. Researchers say studies support the claims of traditional Iranian medicine showing ajowan extract possesses a clear-cut analgesic pain-relieving effect. The presence of acetylcholine may explain why ajowan so successfully soothes a fussy digestive tract. Acetylcholine is a chemical that controls involuntary muscles, like those that line the gut.

Asthma.

Researchers found that boiled extract of ajowan given to people with asthma every 30 minutes for 2 hours improved breathing ability. Ajowan is comparable to theophylline in opening asthmatic airways. Theophylline a bronchodilator that expands the airways.

High blood pressure.

Ajowan had the same effect as verapamil in decreasing the blood pressure as it relaxes blood vessels and increases the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart while reducing its workload.

Cough.

Iranian researchers found that ajowan works more effectively than codeine in suppressing a cough. The probable reason being is the acetylcholine, calming the contractions that result in coughing.
